Project Description


  • Understanding the phase behavior of responsive hydrogels:

    Hydrogels are polymeric networks, extensively contain water. The ability of hydrogels to retain water is due to hydrophilic functional groups while the hydrocarbon backbone provide the resistance towards dissolution. Several external factors such as pH, electric field, magnetic field, pressure, temperature, ionic strength, solvent composition, etc. can affect properties of such materials. Thus these materials are also known as responsive hydrogels. The responsive behavior of hydrogels is found its application in several areas, such as drug delivery, cell cultures, tissue engineering, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, biomedical applications, etc. Interaction between different functional groups and solvent molecules determines properties of the hydrogels and their responsive behavior. Designing of a hydrogel for specific application requires detail understanding of the interaction of polymeric network with solvent molecules and hence the macroscopic properties can be tuned. Here, at LTD, I am involved in development of the interaction between the polymeric network and solvent molecules to ensure accurate prediction of responsive behavior of a hydrogel.
