Thermodynamics of tribological contacts
The optimization of tribological contacts is important for the sustainability of technical processes. Since experimental investigations of tribological contacts are difficult, modeling and simulation plays a crucial role in this field. Thermodynamics is central in this, especially regarding the description of dissipation processes and the modeling of lubricants under extreme conditions as they prevail in tribological contacts. In this research project, these two aspects will be addressed in a multiscale approach, in which molecular dynamics simulations will be combined with molecular-based equations of state and elasto-hydrodynamic simulations of tribological contacts. Furthermore, experimental studies of thermophysical properties of lubricants under extreme pressure will be carried out.
